Product Details

Pennsylvania sedge functions as a versatile ground cover, offering a low-maintenance alternative to traditional lawns in areas with minimal foot traffic. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for installation throughout the growing season. This production method supports a healthy root system, allowing the sedge to settle into the landscape effectively when planted.

Also known as oak sedge, Carex pensylvanica is a cool-season, grass-like species native to local ecosystems. It is noted for its ability to thrive under black walnut trees due to its juglone tolerance. While it resembles turfgrass, it requires significantly less water and fertilizer once established, making it a sustainable choice for naturalizing landscapes.

Ideally suited for dry to moist well-drained soils, this sedge adapts to exposure ranging from full sun to part shade. It is deer resistant and can be mowed to maintain a tidy appearance, though it naturally spreads to form a soft, green carpet. A single plant can spread up to four feet over four years, providing effective coverage for erosion control or ornamental planting beds. It is hardy in Zones 4–8.

Planting potted stock allows for flexibility in timing, enabling projects to proceed when conditions are favorable. With proper site preparation, Pennsylvania sedge establishes a durable, long-lived ground cover that enhances biodiversity.
