Product Details

Little bluestem is a native warm-season grass that forms dense mounds and serves as a cornerstone species for prairie restoration and naturalized landscapes. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants can be installed throughout the growing season with reduced transplant stress. The root system is well-developed within the pouch, allowing for efficient handling and successful establishment in a variety of site conditions.

Schizachyrium scoparium is one of the “big four” grass species once abundant in the prairies of central North America. The plant begins the season with deep blue-green stem bases before transitioning to beautiful deep red stems topped with finely textured seed tufts by late summer. These reddish colors persist through winter snows, providing three-season interest and essential winter forage for bird species.

This species prefers full sun and dry soils, tolerating a wide range of conditions provided the site is not a wetland or sub-irrigated area. It readily reseeds and performs well in naturalized areas, hosting several skipper species and creating important habitat for birds throughout the year. Hardy in zones 3–10, it grows up to 5 feet tall and 1 foot wide.

Planting potted stock allows for precise placement in meadow projects or ornamental borders. When planted in a well-prepared site, little bluestem contributes lasting structure and ecological function to the landscape.
