Why Native Plants Matter: Restoring Nature Where We Live

The Scale of Ecological Loss

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the scale of ecological loss.

The evidence is all around us: forests fragmented by development, meadows replaced by lawn, waterways stressed by runoff, invasive plants crowding out native communities, and bird and insect populations struggling in landscapes that no longer provide enough food or shelter. We see these changes in our backyards, along roadsides, on farms, and in the woods.

At the heart of this crisis is a simple imbalance: we are consuming the natural world faster than it can renew itself. We are drawing down the principal instead of living on the interest.

The principal, in this case, is the Earth’s natural capital: forests, soils, wetlands, rivers, oceans, grasslands, pollinators, and biodiversity. The interest is the abundance these systems generate when they remain healthy: clean water, fertile soil, food, timber, flood protection, carbon storage, beauty, and ecological resilience.

If we eat the goose, we lose the golden eggs.

Consumption itself is not the problem. We need resources to live and thrive. The problem is consuming in ways that diminish the sources of future abundance. When forests are cleared faster than they can recover, soil is depleted faster than it can rebuild, and habitat is fragmented until wildlife disappears, we are not merely using resources. We are bankrupting the accounts.

What Do We Owe the Next Generation?

That debt will be paid by future generations, who have no say in the choices we make now.

Most of us understand this responsibility instinctively in our own families. Parents sacrifice sleep, comfort, money, and time to care for their children. In communities, people plant trees whose shade they may never sit beneath. Teachers, farmers, builders, and caretakers invest in futures they may not personally see. We know how to act on behalf of the next generation when the relationship is personal.

Why, then, do we struggle to do the same collectively?

Part of the answer is scale. Ecological decline can feel too large, too global, too tangled in politics, economics, and institutions beyond our reach. When the problem feels impossibly big, some people turn away. Others fall into despair. Social media often intensifies the feeling, serving up a steady stream of collapse, cynicism, and helplessness.

But another response is taking root.

A New Response Taking Root

Across the country, people are beginning to act directly where they live. They are replacing lawns with native plants. They are removing invasive species and planting oaks, willows, asters, dogwoods, sedges, native grasses, and other species that rebuild habitat. They are creating living landscapes in yards, school grounds, parks, farms, churchyards, roadsides, and municipal spaces.

This work does not require waiting for permission from a distant institution. It does not depend on a perfect policy environment. It does not ask any one of us to solve the whole crisis alone.

It asks us to begin.

Tallamy’s Invitation

Few people have done more to clarify the ecological importance of these ordinary spaces than entomologist and author Douglas Tallamy. Through books such as Bringing Nature Home and How Can I Help, and through the Homegrown National Park movement, Tallamy has helped millions of people understand that yards, farms, parks, campuses, and community landscapes are not separate from nature. They are part of it.

His great contribution has been to show that planting native species is not merely symbolic. It is ecological repair.

Last September, we were fortunate to host Tallamy at Arthur’s Point Farm as part of a series of walks and talks organized by the Columbia Land Conservancy and supported by New Leaf Eco Landscapes

Regaining a Sense of Agency

Tallamy’s message resonates because it meets people where they are.

We know that ecological systems are under stress. We see fewer fireflies, fewer butterflies, and we hear fewer bird songs. We watch the woods fill with invasive species. We’re surrounded by lawns and ornamental plantings that look alive, but offer little sustenance to the insects that hold the food web together.

What many people lack is not concern, it's agency.

Tallamy offers a way to regain agency. He doesn't claim that one yard will save the world by itself. But millions of yards, parks, farms, campuses, and community spaces can function together as a living network. A single planting may feel small in isolation. But a single planting is not the whole story, it is a stitch in a larger fabric.

Protection and Restoration Both Matter

Strong environmental laws and land conservation programs are as important as ever. We need public parks, wildlife refuges, wilderness areas, conservation easements, and clean water and air protections. These tools protect places and species that might otherwise be lost, and they give communities a way to defend the natural systems we all depend on.

But protection alone cannot restore what we have lost and diminished.

Many environmental laws are designed to prevent further harm or protect species and habitats already under pressure. That role is necessary, but often reactive. Species are usually protected after they are already in trouble. Habitat is often defended after it has already been fragmented or degraded. Legal tools can slow losses and protect what remains, but they cannot by themselves rebuild all the ecological relationships missing from our everyday landscapes.

That is where Tallamy’s invitation becomes so important.

His approach does not replace conservation policy or land protection. It complements them. Instead of asking only what must be restricted or preserved, it asks what can be restored, planted, connected, and shared. It invites everyone into the work by showing them what native plants and community participation make possible.

A conservation law may protect a wetland, forest, or endangered species. A community of people planting native species can help extend that care into yards, farms, school grounds, parks, roadsides, and town centers. Together, protection and restoration begin to rebuild the living fabric that supports insects, birds, soil, water, wildlife, and us.

The Power of Native Plants

Plant an oak, and you are not just planting a tree. You are planting a supermarket for caterpillars and birds. Plant asters or sunflowers, and you are supporting late-season pollinators. Plant a native shrub along a streambank, and you are helping hold soil, slow runoff, shade water, and create cover for trout and other native species. Replace a patch of lawn with a small meadow, and you are changing the terms of our relationship with the living world around us.

The work is not centered on restriction. Its power stems from participation.

How Native Plants Rebuild the Food Web

Native plants matter because they are woven into local ecological relationships. Many insects can only feed on certain plants or plant families. Birds depend heavily on insects, especially when raising young. Research cited by Tallamy and others has found that about 96% of North American bird species rear their young in part or entirely on insects, with caterpillars dominating nestling diets in many bird families. This is one reason native plants are so important. They are not simply decorative. They are the infrastructure of the food-web.

From Lawn to Living Habitat

A landscape filled mostly with turfgrass and non-native ornamentals may look tidy, but often functions like a food desert for wildlife. A landscape planted with native trees, shrubs, wildflowersgrasses and sedges begins to function differently. It feeds insects, insects feed birds, and roots feed soil microbes that enable plants to access nutrients. Flowers and shrubs feed pollinators, seeds and berries feed mammals and migrating birds. Leaf litter shelters overwintering insects and returns organic matter to the ground.

This does not require every property to become a wilderness. It requires us to ask better questions: Can part of the lawn become meadow? Can the edge of the woods be replanted with native shrubs? Can leaves remain under trees instead of being removed? Can a wet corner become a rain garden? Can a schoolyard include wildlife habitat? Can a municipal park plant for pollinators as well as people? Can a farm field edge become a functional hedgerowThese are modest questions with large implications when multiplied by millions.

What We See at the Nursery

At Arthur’s Point Farm, we often meet people at the moment their relationship to the land is changing. A familiar story goes something like this: someone removes invasive plants from a woodland edge, streambank, or backyard. At first, the goal is simply to get rid of what is spreading too aggressively. But once the invasive plants are gone, another question appears: what should replace them? That question is where restoration begins.

What Comes After Removal?

Bare soil rarely stays bare. If we do not help guide what comes next, the same invasive species often return, or another disturbance-adapted plant fills the space. Native planting is not only about beauty or preference, it is about helping a damaged system move toward greater function, stability, and life.

It does not take long to notice the change. A few native perennials begin blooming and insects arrive. Shrubs establish and birds investigate. Warm-season grasses root deeply and hold soil through heavy rains. A small planting becomes a new center of life and abundance.

Small Changes Transform Life

The transformation is not instant and not always tidy. Restoration requires patience, but the feedback can be surprisingly immediate. When people see life return, they begin to understand that their choices matter.

That experience changes how we think about ownership. Land begins to feel less like a possession and more like a relationship. We start asking deeper questions: What does it mean to be a good neighbor to the living world? What responsibilities come with caring for land? How can we belong to a landscape rather than simply occupy it?

Stewardship, Not Control

There is a paradox at the heart of restoration. On the one hand, healing damaged landscapes often requires human intervention. We remove invasive plants. We plant native species. We protect young trees from deer browse. We manage water, soil, and disturbance. We make choices. On the other hand, careless human control is one of the reasons ecosystems are in crisis. We have too often treated land as something to dominate, simplify, drain, mow, spray, pave, or force into predictable patterns.

When Control Creates New Problems

The history of land management is full of examples where attempts to control nature created new problems. Plants introduced for erosion control became invasive. Wetlands drained for productivity created flooding and water-quality problems elsewhere. Lawns maintained for order removed habitat across millions of acres.

Restoration takes a different perspective. It requires observation and humility, but is not passive. It begins by understanding the existing conditions and choosing plants that belong. It works with ecological tendencies rather than forcing land into simplified shapes and functions. It accepts that living systems are dynamic, relational, and never fully under our command.

This is the shift from domination to stewardship. We are not outside the system, managing it from above. We are participants within it.

The Antidote to Despair Is Participation

Climate instability, biodiversity loss, and ecological fragmentation are real. None of this should be minimized. But despair is not a strategy, detachment is not a refuge. Cynicism does not rebuild the living world. Participation does.

Planting native plants will not solve every environmental problem. But it is one of the most direct ways people can help restore ecological function where we live. It lets us channel our concerns into meaningful action. It connects our individual work with collective repair. Perhaps just as importantly, it brings people back into real world relationships with each other and our natural home.

Restoration Is Contagious

Restoration is contagious in the best sense. One neighbor plants a meadow strip, another asks about the butterflies. A school installs a pollinator garden and the town rethinks its mowing schedule. A park adds native trees and a neighbor removes invasive shrubs and replants the understory. A community begins to see itself not as a collection of isolated properties, but as part of a shared ecological fabric.

This is where Tallamy’s message is so powerful. It does not deny the scale of the crisis. It answers it with a scale of a different kind: many small acts, repeated across the land, connected by a common purpose.

Nature’s Best Hope Is Not Somewhere Else

Nature is in the places we already live, work, learn, farm, worship, gather, and play. It is in the ordinary spaces where we decide what kind of world we are willing to leave behind. It is in the plants we choose, the soil we protect, the insects we feed, the birds we welcome, and the communities we build together.

The path forward is collective. It begins with a single plant. And then another.
