Product Details

Switchgrass is a resilient warm-season grass that adds structure to the landscape while supporting local biodiversity. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for installation throughout the growing season. This format supports a healthy root system, allowing the grass to establish effectively in a well-prepared site.

Panicum virgatum is a clumping species that was once abundant in the prairies of central North America. As one of the “big four” grass species alongside indiangrass, big bluestem, and little bluestem, it plays a significant role in native grassland ecosystems. In late summer, the plants exhibit purple stigmas that develop into large, open, and attractive seedheads.

Switchgrass thrives in part to full sun and adapts to a range of moisture levels, tolerating dry soils while growing taller in moist conditions. Hardy in zones 3–10, it typically reaches 3–6 feet in height with a spread of 1–3 feet. Its rigid yellow stems remain upright through winter, providing critical cover, nesting sites, and food sources for song and game birds. It also serves as a larval host for most banded skippers and satyrs.

Planting from potted stock allows for flexible timing and reliable establishment in diverse settings, from restoration projects to ornamental gardens. With proper care, this grass forms durable clumps that offer three-season interest and lasting ecological value.
