Product Details

Appalachian sedge is a semi-evergreen, clump-forming perennial that brings fine texture to shaded landscapes and woodland gardens. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for installation throughout the growing season. The narrow foliage forms soft mounds that create a beautiful effect when planted in masses, serving as an effective groundcover or lawn alternative.

Carex appalachica is a cool-season species native to dry, mesic environments. Similar to Pennsylvania sedge, it is distinguished by its clump-forming habit and preference for drier soils. It is adaptable to various site conditions, including areas under black walnut trees due to its juglone tolerance. The delicate, fine-textured foliage tends to drape gracefully rather than standing upright.

Appalachian sedge thrives on well-drained woodland slopes and is an excellent choice for areas where turfgrass is difficult to maintain. It requires no mowing and is generally deer resistant, though it does not tolerate heavy foot traffic. Inconspicuous flowers provide nectar for insects and seeds for birds, while the foliage serves as a host plant for skipper and satyr caterpillars. It performs best in part sun to full shade.

Planting from potted stock allows for efficient establishment in well-prepared garden beds or restoration areas. Once rooted, Appalachian sedge provides a resilient, low-maintenance layer of vegetation that supports local wildlife.
