Product Details

Indiangrass brings vertical structure and seasonal color to landscapes, functioning as one of the foundational "big four" prairie grasses. We offer this species as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, which allows for planting flexibility throughout the growing season. This method supports the development of a healthy root system, helping the plant adapt to new sites with minimal transplant stress.

Sorgastrum nutans is a warm-season bunchgrass characterized by blue-green stems that transition to deep orange and purple hues in autumn. Native to much of the United States and formerly abundant in the prairies of central North America, it produces golden flowering parts that mature into large, soft golden-brown seed heads. As a key component of grassland ecosystems, it naturally associates with big bluestem, switchgrass, and little bluestem.

Indiangrass thrives in full sun and is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including occasional flooding and drought. It serves well as an accent plant but benefits from neighboring vegetation to provide support and prevent the tall fall foliage from flopping over. Ecologically, indiangrass provides nesting material and food for birds and mammals, while acting as a larval host for the pepper-and-salt skipper butterfly. It is also noted for being deer tolerant.

Planting from potted stock provides an active root system ready to integrate into the soil. With proper site selection, indiangrass establishes reliably, offering long-term resilience against harsh environmental factors like fire and drought. A well-prepared site allows this durable native perennial to contribute lasting beauty and habitat value to the landscape.
