Product Details

Big bluestem is a towering warm-season grass that adds vertical structure and ecological value to landscapes. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for planting throughout the growing season. This native bunchgrass is known for its impressive height and resilience, making it a strong candidate for restoration projects and naturalized gardens.

Andropogon gerardii is a defining species of the tallgrass prairie, historically abundant across central North America. It is one of the “big four” grass species of the prairies, along with indiangrass, switchgrass, and little bluestem. Having co-evolved with migratory bison, this species is adapted to seasonal grazing but requires care during the growing season, as it can be damaged if cut back too frequently by mowers or livestock.

This grass thrives in full sun and tolerates both drought and flood-like conditions when established. Reaching mature heights of 4–8 feet with a spread of 2–3 feet, it provides critical cover, nesting sites, and food for over 24 bird species, including sedge wrens and western meadowlarks. It also serves as a larval host for several skipper species and is considered deer-resistant, making it a valuable addition to wildlife habitats and meadows.

Planting potted stock allows for efficient installation in well-prepared sites. Growers can expect a robust, long-lived perennial that anchors the soil and supports local biodiversity.
