Product Details

Prairie dropseed is a resilient warm-season bunchgrass valued for its fine texture and adaptability to challenging conditions. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants arrive with healthy root systems ready for planting throughout the growing season. This production method supports successful establishment, allowing the grass to settle into the landscape with minimal transplant stress.

Sporobolus heterolepis forms dense, round tufts of fine blades that turn a striking golden orange in autumn. In midsummer, delicate seed heads rise above the foliage, releasing a unique fragrance often compared to coriander, popcorn, or honey. The tan mounds persist through winter without being flattened by snow, providing three-season interest and structure in the garden.

Ideally suited for hot, dry areas, rock gardens, or borders, prairie dropseed serves as an effective ground cover and a larval host for many species of butterflies and moths. It thrives in full sun and tolerates most soil types, including those near black walnut trees due to its juglone tolerance. Hardy in zones 3–9, mature plants reach approximately 2 to 3 feet in height and 2 feet in width.

While slow to grow initially, prairie dropseed develops into a long-lived, drought-tolerant feature once established. Gardeners can expect a hardy, low-maintenance addition to the landscape that withstands deer pressure and air pollution. We recommend installing this potted stock in a well-prepared site to ensure good soil contact for the developing roots.
