Product Details
Wild strawberry is a valuable native groundcover known for its sweet edible fruit and ecological benefits. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for planting throughout the growing season. This production method supports a healthy root system, allowing the plants to establish well in a variety of site conditions.
Fragaria virginiana spreads by runners to form a dense mat of foliage. In early summer, small white flowers give way to highly flavorful wild berries, which are a parent species to modern cultivated strawberries. The plant serves as a larval host for gray hairstreak and grizzled skipper caterpillars and is of special importance to native bees.
This species is well-suited for use in edible landscapes, hedgerows, and agroforestry systems. It is shade-tolerant, although fruit production is most abundant when planted in full sun. Wild strawberry attracts predatory insects that contribute to biological pest control and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. It is hardy in zones 3–8 and typically grows to a height of 4–6 inches.
Planting potted stock provides flexibility in timing, allowing for installation when the site is fully prepared. With consistent moisture during the first season, this adaptable perennial establishes quickly to provide ground cover and wildlife support.
