Product Details

Virginia bluebells are a classic spring ephemeral valued for their ability to create a spectacular groundcover display when planted in masses. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for installation in woodland gardens or shaded borders. The root system is developed to support successful transplanting into prepared sites during the growing season.

Mertensia virginica is an erect, clump-forming perennial characterized by smooth gray-green leaves. In early spring, clusters of pink buds open into lavender or light blue bell-shaped flowers. As a true ephemeral, the foliage dies back to the ground by mid-summer, entering a period of summer dormancy once the blooming cycle concludes.

Virginia bluebells thrives in moist, rich woods and river floodplains, requiring consistent moisture and well-drained soil to perform well. It is best suited for shade to partial shade locations. Because the plant goes dormant in summer, it should be co-planted with other native perennials or annuals that can fill the space as the season progresses. During their few weeks of bloom, the flowers attract bees, butterflies, and moths.

Virginia bluebells are an excellent choice for adding early season color to restoration projects or naturalized landscapes. The plants establish well in appropriate conditions, returning each spring to expand the colony. We recommend planting in a well-prepared site that mimics the cool, moist conditions of a forest floor.
