Product Details

Culver's root is an easy-to-grow native perennial known for its distinctive flower spikes and deer resistance. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for planting throughout the growing season.

Veronicastrum virginicum's spikes of flowers on unbranched stems are often likened to candelabras. Historically used in medicinal applications by the Cherokee, Seneca, and Menominee, the plant owes its common English name to a doctor who popularized the root's laxative properties. While it spreads through its roots, it is easily contained in the landscape and is currently considered threatened in New York. Seed for this plant was collected within 250 miles of Arthur’s Point Farm.

Culver's root is an adaptable species that thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist soil. Hardy in zones 3-8, it typically reaches a mature height of 2–5 feet with a spread of 2–4 feet. Culver's root provides special value to native bees and attracts beneficial insects that prey upon pest insects, making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens or restoration projects.

This robust perennial establishes well in a variety of site conditions, offering ecological support and visual interest. We recommend planting in a well-prepared site to ensure good soil contact for the root system.
