Product Details

Blue flag iris brings vibrant color and ecological value to wet landscapes, featuring showy blooms that draw pollinators. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for planting throughout the growing season. This production method supports a healthy root system, allowing for reduced transplant stress when moving the plant to its permanent location.

Iris versicolor is a native species found across the wetlands of the Northeast, similar in appearance to the common garden iris. It is noted for its conspicuous, complex violet-blue flowers marked with a splash of yellow on the sepal. While the roots are extremely poisonous to people and livestock, the dried and powdered root, known as orris, has historically been used in perfumes for its violet-like scent.

This species thrives in rich, moist to wet soil and can withstand being completely submerged, making it an excellent choice for riparian buffers or rain gardens. It also grows well in most garden settings, spreading easily by rhizomes and self-seeding to form established clumps. Blue flag iris performs best in partial shade to full sun and reaches a mature height of 2–3 feet with a spread of about 2 feet. It is hardy in zones 3–8.

Planting from potted stock allows for precise placement in established landscapes or restoration projects. With consistent moisture and a well-prepared site, this iris establishes readily and provides reliable seasonal interest.
