Virginia Pine (Bareroot)

Virginia pine is a native, climate-resilient tree suited to hedgerows, wildlife forage, and pollinator-friendly plantings. Offered for late fall and early spring dormant planting, bareroot stock is well suited to larger plantings and can be a cost-effective option when given proper planting conditions and consistent watering during establishment.

Pinus virginiana is a pioneer tree with a naturally "scraggly" growth form. It flowers in April, hosts the imperial moth caterpillar, and produces seeds that provide food for numerous birds. Virginia pine is not susceptible to white pine blister rust and is moderately pollution tolerant.

Virginia pine grows 15–40 ft tall and 10–30 ft wide. It grows in full shade and tolerates dry to average, average, and average to moist soil moisture conditions. It does well in poor soils, including rocky / gravelly, sandy, well-drained, acidic, clay, and loam soils. It is hardy in zones 4–8 and is deer resistant.

With its tolerance of poor soils, pioneer growth habit, and wildlife value, Virginia pine is suited to naturalized plantings and hedgerows. When planted correctly and given consistent watering, bareroot plants can establish and develop into mature trees. Bareroot stock is offered for late fall and early spring dormant planting.
