Viburnum, Nannyberry (Bareroot)

Nannyberry is a native shrub with four-season interest suited to hedgerows, riparian and wetland plantings, ornamental landscapes, and wildlife forage. Bareroot stock can be a practical, cost-effective choice for larger plantings, with late fall and early spring offering suitable dormant planting windows. Viburnum lentago grows 8–30 ft tall and 6–12 ft wide, with flowers appearing from April through June. Unlike most viburnums, which have a shrub growth habit, nannyberry can sometimes develop into a tree form. Its winter fruit feeds songbirds, game birds, and mammals, and it is a larval host to the spring azure butterfly.

Nannyberry grows in full shade, part sun, and full sun. It tolerates average, average to moist, and dry to average soil moisture conditions, as well as clay, loam, poor, rich, rocky / gravelly, sandy, and well-drained soils. It is deer resistant and native to the Midwest, West, and Northeast.

With its adaptable growth habit, wildlife value, and interest across the seasons, nannyberry is well suited to hedgerows and a range of landscape plantings. When planted correctly and given consistent watering, bareroot plants can establish and develop into mature shrubs or, in some cases, tree-form plants.
