Product Details

Sideoats grama is an attractive, medium-tall warm-season bunch grass valued for its ornamental appeal and ecological contributions. This species features small purple spikes that resemble oats and transition to a tan color in the fall, often accompanied by foliage turning red and purple. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, it is ready for planting throughout the growing season.

Bouteloua curtipendula stays relatively short in the spring, allowing it to blend effectively with spring wildflowers before reaching its full height. In natural settings, it is frequently found growing alongside little bluestem. This grass is adapted to disturbed areas and is noted for being deer resistant and drought tolerant.

Ideally suited for habitat restoration and ornamental landscaping, sideoats grama thrives in sun to part shade and tolerates both dry and moist soils. It serves as a food source for birds and adult skippers, including the orange skipperling and bronze roadside-skipper, while providing nesting structure for native bees. It also acts as a larval host for dotted, green, and sheep skipper caterpillars. Reaching 1–3 feet in height and spread, it requires minimal maintenance; mowing or cutting back is not recommended and should be done sparingly if necessary.

This native perennial establishes well across a range of site conditions, offering three-season interest and vital support for local pollinators. The potted format ensures a healthy start for this resilient grass when introduced to a well-prepared site.
