Product Details

American persimmon is a fast-growing native tree valued for its late-season fruit and suitability for silvopasture systems. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, making it a cost-effective option for establishing larger wildlife corridors or orchard rootstock.

Known botanically as Diospyros virginiana, which translates to "fruit of the gods," this species is celebrated for its distinctive black, blocky bark and vibrant sunset orange and red fall foliage. These are seedling trees, meaning fruit production is variable and specific traits are not guaranteed. Consequently, they are best utilized as rootstock for grafting or in wildlife settings where genetic diversity is an asset.

This tree serves as an excellent larval host for the luna moth and provides a critical food source for wildlife, with fruit dropping incrementally from mid-fall into deep winter. It thrives in loamy, moist, well-drained soils but will perform poorly in dry conditions. For optimal fruit production, plant in full sun, though it tolerates partial shade. Since the species is dioecious, requiring both male and female trees for pollination, we recommend planting at least five trees to ensure proper fruit set. Expect a mature height of 40-60 ft with a spread of 30 ft.

Our persimmons are grown from seed sourced from Oikos Tree Crops in Michigan.

Please note: this is not a bareroot product. Our tubelings are 2" by 10" first-year seedling trees or shrubs that are ready to plant. Tubelings are valued for their well-developed deep roots. They are less subject to transplant shock due to minimal root disturbance. Similar to bareroots, they are economical to plant, especially at a large scale, and establish easily when planted in a well-prepared site. Tubelings can be shipped.
