Larch (Bareroot)

Larch is a native deciduous conifer valued for its soft needle texture, rot-resistant wood, and striking seasonal color, shifting from bright green to golden yellow before dropping in fall. Offered as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, it can be a cost-effective option for larger plantings when planted correctly and given consistent watering during establishment. It is well suited to northern landscapes and riparian plantings.

Botanically known as Larix laricina, larch produces clusters of soft needles in spring that create a light, feathery appearance, followed by a distinctive golden display in fall before shedding. Native to the Midwest and Northeast, it is well adapted to colder climates and is notable among conifers for its deciduous habit.

Larch typically grows 40–80 ft tall with a spread of 15–30 ft, forming a tall, upright structure over time. It grows in full sun and establishes in clay, loam, and organic soils ranging from well-drained to poorly drained conditions, including consistently moist sites, when planted into a well-prepared site.

Larch fits well in riparian or agroforestry plantings and open landscapes where seasonal change and wildlife value are priorities. Its seeds and buds support red crossbill, pine siskin, and ruffed grouse, along with mammals including snowshoe hare and red squirrel. It also serves as a larval host for the Columbia silkmoth. Bareroot stock is offered for late fall and early spring dormant planting.
