Product Details

Red osier dogwood brings vibrant color to the landscape while supporting local pollinators and bird populations. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants arrive with a root system prepared for successful transplanting during the growing season. This production method supports healthy root branching, reducing transplant stress when moving the shrub to its permanent location.

Swida sericea is recognized for its seasonal transformations, starting with smooth foliage that turns brilliant colors in the fall. The winter display is particularly striking, as the stems turn a bright red that stands out clearly in snowy conditions. The floral display consists of small white clusters in early summer, which give way to white berries in late summer that provide a food source for avian wildlife.

Ideally suited for rain gardens, wetland edges, or ornamental borders, red osier dogwood adapts well to areas with high moisture. It tolerates standing water and prefers moist, well-drained soils in locations receiving full sun to part shade. Growing to a mature height of 9 feet and a spread of 7 feet, it acts as a larval host for spring azure and summer azure butterflies. Its spreading nature makes it effective for erosion control along banks.

Choosing potted stock allows for greater flexibility in planting time, enabling installation throughout the active season. These shrubs settle in quickly to offer immediate structure and habitat value. With proper siting in appropriate soil conditions, red osier dogwood becomes a resilient and colorful feature in the landscape.
