Dogwood, Flowering (Bareroot)

Flowering dogwood is a classic native understory tree valued for its showy spring display, layered branching, and strong seasonal interest. Offered as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, it can be a cost-effective option for larger plantings when planted correctly and given consistent watering during establishment, making it well suited to woodland gardens, hedgerows, and ornamental landscape plantings.

Botanically known as Cornus florida, flowering dogwood produces clusters of small flowers surrounded by prominent bracts in spring, creating a bright and recognizable display. Native across the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest, it is appreciated for both its ornamental value and its ecological role in native landscapes.

Flowering dogwood typically grows 15–30 ft tall with a similar spread, forming a broad, layered canopy over time. It grows in full sun to part sun and establishes in clay, loam, sandy, and organic soils with well-drained, acidic, or richer soil conditions when planted into a well-prepared site.

Flowering dogwood fits well in woodland edges and residential landscapes where structure and seasonal change are valued. Its blooms provide nectar for butterflies including spring azure and mining bees, while its bright red fruits feed wildlife such as wild turkey, ruffed grouse, black bear, red fox, and white-tailed deer.
