American bellflower is a tall native woodland wildflower valued for its striking violet blue blooms and its ability to bring height and color to shaded plantings. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, it can be planted through the growing season when conditions allow, making it well suited for woodland gardens, riparian plantings, and naturalized perennial beds.
Botanically known as Campanula americana, this adaptable native species produces distinctive flat, star-shaped flowers with a pale center from early through late summer. The tall flowering stems create a bright display in shaded landscapes.
American bellflower typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall with a spread of about 1 to 2 feet. It grows in full shade to part sun and performs best in moist, rich soils including loamy planting areas with acidic conditions, making it a useful choice for woodland edges and riparian landscapes. A self-sowing biennial, its first year is a small rosette, followed by beautiful flowers in its second season. Though the original plant will die after flowering, the ease with which it grows from seed means it will continue its life cycle in various parts of the garden.
This species is well suited for woodland gardens and naturalized areas where its height and color can stand out among other shade-tolerant plants. Bumblebees, leaf-cutting bees, Halictid bees, butterflies, skippers, and hummingbirds visit the flowers for nectar and pollen, making potted stock grown in root-prune pouches a practical way to introduce this native pollinator plant into established plantings.
