Alder, Smooth (Bareroot)

Smooth alder is a native, climate-resilient shrub suited to riparian plantings, wetland restoration, and hedgerows. Available as bareroot stock for dormant planting in late fall or early spring, this can be a cost-effective choice for larger plantings when properly planted and consistently watered during establishment.

Alnus serrulata is a spreading, suckering shrub with an ornamental spring flowering period in April and May. Alders support up to 255 species of caterpillars and sawfly larvae. Seeds persist for up to a year in the plant, providing additional food for migratory and nesting birds, who also shelter in alder thickets.

Smooth alder grows up to 15 ft tall, with a spreading, suckering habit. It is suited to average to moist, moist, and wet soils, including loam, organic / mucky, poorly drained, rich, and sandy soils. Smooth alder grows in full sun and part sun and is hardy in zones 4–9.

With its native habitat value, spring flowers, and support for wildlife, smooth alder is a practical choice for ecological plantings and hedgerows. When planted correctly and given consistent watering, bareroot plants will establish well and develop into a spreading shrub.
