    Product Details

The American sycamore has a commanding presence in the landscape, valued for its rapid growth and ecological contributions to riparian zones. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these trees are ready for planting throughout the growing season. This production method supports a healthy root system, allowing the tree to establish effectively in a variety of site conditions.

Platanus occidentalis features dark brown bark on young stems that matures into a distinctive multi-colored, pale, and flaky appearance. This native species serves as a larval host for up to 43 species of butterflies and moths, including the luna moth. Its extensive root system makes it particularly well-suited for stabilizing riverbanks and restoring floodplain habitats.

Ideal for riparian buffers, wetland restoration, or large ornamental landscapes, sycamore thrives in full sun and can adapt to sandy or clay wet soils. It is highly tolerant of flooding, making it a reliable choice for low-lying areas. Growers should plan for a substantial mature size, reaching approximately 80 feet in height and 60 feet in width. It is hardy in zones 4–9.

Planting from potted stock allows for flexibility in timing, enabling installation when site conditions are most favorable. With proper placement in a well-prepared site, the sycamore develops into a massive, long-lived shade tree that anchors the local ecosystem.
