Product Details
New York ironweed serves a vital role in the landscape as a deer-resistant native perennial that thrives in wet conditions. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for planting throughout the growing season. This production method supports a healthy root system, allowing the plant to settle effectively into well-prepared sites without the stress often associated with traditional container stock.
Vernonia noveboracensis is recognized by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for its special value to native bees. In early autumn, clusters of purple flowers nod atop tall stems, followed by seed heads that provide essential winter forage for birds. Historically, the Cherokee have used this species as an anti-inflammatory medicine and to treat gastrointestinal irregularities.
Ideally suited for rain gardens, riparian buffers, and wet meadows, this species prefers wet soil but can establish in a variety of site conditions. It performs best in full sun and reaches a mature height of 5–7 feet with a spread of roughly 1 foot. Hardy in zones 5–9, New York ironweed is also juglone tolerant, making it a practical choice for diverse planting areas where black walnut trees are present.
This robust perennial adds vertical structure and ecological function to the garden, supporting pollinators late in the season. With consistent moisture during the establishment period, it develops into a resilient component of the landscape. We provide this potted stock to facilitate reliable planting in varied soil conditions.
