Blue wild indigo is a shrubby perennial valued for its deep purple pea-like flowers. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches. This production method supports the development of a healthy root system, allowing the plant to be planted throughout the growing season.
Baptisia australis features attractive round, blue-green leaves and upright shrubby branches. As a member of the pea family, it functions as a nitrogen fixer, improving soil conditions for itself and neighboring vegetation. While it spends its first year establishing a taproot, the upright shrubby branches thrive in subsequent years with minimal effort.
This species is well-suited for ornamental landscaping and pollinator gardens, serving as a larval host to the wild indigo duskywing skipper. It prefers full sun and average, well-drained soil, though it can establish in harsh conditions. Growing to a mature height of 4 feet with a 3-foot spread, the plant blooms in late spring, attracting numerous insects and butterflies, while birds feed on the seeds throughout the winter.
Planting potted stock allows for flexibility in timing and placement within the landscape. With a well-prepared site, this early bloomer provides three-season interest and ecological support for local wildlife.
