Product Details

Beach plum is a tough, adaptable shrub that brings ecological value and edible potential to dry landscapes. This plant is offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, a method that supports a healthy root system and minimizes transplant stress. This availability allows for greater flexibility in planting schedules, enabling installation during the active growing season. It is an excellent choice for adding immediate structure to restoration sites or edible gardens.

Originating along the Northeast coast, Prunus maritima has evolved to withstand salt spray and low-nutrient environments. Its ability to tolerate drought and poor soil conditions makes it a standout choice for difficult planting sites. Beyond its hardiness, the shrub provides small fruits that are enjoyed by people and wildlife. The foliage supports biodiversity by hosting the larvae of several butterfly species, including the red spotted purple and Eastern tiger swallowtail.

Ideal for use in windbreaks or as a stabilizing element on slopes, beach plum grows to a mature height of 6 feet with a spread of 4 feet. It performs best in full sun locations, though it can handle some partial shade. The plant demands well-drained, dry soils and should not be placed in wet areas or overwatered. Hardy from zones 3–8, it integrates well into low-input landscapes and native plant buffers.

Whether used for erosion control or as a fruit-producing hedge, this species delivers consistent results with minimal ongoing care. Its suckering habit helps fill in spaces over time, creating valuable cover for birds and insects. Our potted stock is ready to transition into the ground, establishing well in a variety of site conditions when the specific soil requirements are met.
