Tall Thimbleweed (Potted)

Product Details

Tall thimbleweed is a native woodland perennial valued for its thimble-shaped flowers, upright stems, and distinctive cottony seed heads that persist well after flowering. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, it can be planted through the growing season when conditions allow, making it easy to incorporate into woodland gardens, native plantings, and habitat-focused landscapes.

Botanically known as Anemone virginiana, tall thimbleweed is a widespread North American species found across much of the Northeast, Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest. It produces greenish-white flowers on tall stems beginning in early summer, followed by the characteristic seed heads which provide ornamental interest. It is not palatable to deer or rabbits, and is juglone tolerant.

This perennial typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall and spreads 1 to 2 feet, forming a loose clump over time. It performs well in part sun and can establish in a wide variety of soils ranging from sandy and rocky to loamy planting areas, including sites that experience both dry and moderately moist conditions.

Slight contact dermatitis may occur, so wear gloves when pruning! Tall thimbleweed fits well in woodland edges, native perennial plantings, and restoration-focused landscapes where its upright form adds vertical texture. In years to come, tall thimbleweed will spread by seed (though not as aggressively as others in this genus), and can be divided. Potted stock grown in root-prune pouches is a practical way to integrate this native perennial into diverse planting designs.
