Product Details

Paw paw offers a unique combination of ornamental beauty and edible value, producing the largest fruits native to North America. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these trees are available for planting throughout the growing season. This production method supports a healthy root system, allowing the tree to transition effectively to the landscape when planted in a well-prepared site.

Asimina triloba is a distinctive native tree known for its oblong green fruits that ripen in late summer and early fall. The creamy flesh carries a tropical flavor profile often compared to a blend of mango, banana, and pineapple, suitable for eating raw or for use in puddings and breads. Beyond its harvest potential, this species serves a critical ecological role as the exclusive larval host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly.

Ideally suited for orchard plantings, edible landscapes, or naturalized areas, paw paw thrives in rich, moist bottomlands but can also establish in drier locations. These trees are hardy in zones 5-8 and typically reach 15-30 feet in height with a spread of 15-20 feet at maturity. For successful fruit set, at least two trees must be planted to ensure necessary cross-pollination.

Planting potted stock allows for flexibility in timing, enabling growers to install trees when conditions are favorable. With proper care and consistent watering during the first season, these trees can develop into productive specimens that provide seasonal interest and valuable wildlife support. A well-prepared site is essential for long-term vigor and fruit production.
