Product Details

Sundial lupine is the true Northeast native lupine species, celebrated for its spikes of blue and purple pea-like flowers and its critical role as the sole host for the endangered Karner blue butterfly. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for planting throughout the growing season. This nitrogen-fixing perennial improves soil health for surrounding vegetation while providing essential resources for pollinators.

Lupinus perennis is distinct from the common wild lupine (L. polyphyllus) that is native to the Western United States and lacks the ecological benefits of L. perennis in our region. As a member of the pea family, it enriches the soil through nitrogen fixation. This early bloomer displays gradients of color from early May through late June before going dormant after midsummer.

This species is well-suited for restoration projects, pollinator gardens, and landscapes with poor soil conditions. It thrives in full sun to part shade and specifically prefers soils that are not rich in organic matter. Sundial lupine also serves as a larval host for the gray hairstreak and wild indigo duskywing, while its seed pods offer food for birds and small mammals.

Planting potted stock allows for successful establishment in a well-prepared site, even as the plant enters its natural summer dormancy. With mature dimensions reaching 2 feet tall and 1 foot wide, Sundial Lupine establishes a functional and ornamental presence in native plant communities.
