Product Details

Maidenhair fern is a distinct native perennial known for its green shiny fronds that spread in a nearly perfect circle. This unique growth habit provides essential ground-level shelter for toads and lizards within the landscape. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, these plants are ready for installation in appropriate shaded sites throughout the growing season.

Adiantum pedatum colonizes moist, cool woods and shaded areas with rich soil. In early spring, burgundy red fiddleheads emerge before unfurling into the plant's characteristic delicate foliage. While the fiddleheads are generally not considered edible, the stems have historically been used in basketry, and various parts of the plant hold medicinal significance for the Haudenosaunee and Cherokee peoples.

This fern thrives in shade to part shade and requires moist, well-drained soils to persist. It grows up to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide at maturity, making it suitable for woodland gardens or shaded wetland edges. Maidenhair fern will not survive drying out and must be kept moist year-round to maintain its health. It is well-suited for sites that remain consistently damp and cool.

Planting from potted stock allows for careful placement in these specific moisture-dependent environments. When sited in rich soil with consistent hydration, the plant establishes to form a lush, textured ground layer. Success with this species depends on selecting a well-prepared site that protects the fern from desiccation.
