Product Details
Red bearberry is a hardy small shrub that forms a dense mat capable of outcompeting other species when sited correctly. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, this plant is ready for installation throughout the growing season. Though slow-growing initially, it provides long-term stability and ground cover in difficult sites where other plants struggle.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi features semi-evergreen leaves that change color with the seasons. Small flowers give way to red berries that persist into winter, serving as valuable forage for birds and mammals while the plant itself remains deer resistant. Also known by its Algonquin name kinnikinnick, it supports biodiversity as a larval host for hoary elfin and brown elfin caterpillars.
This low-growing plant rarely exceeds a foot in height but can spread three to six feet, making it excellent for stabilizing dry, sandy, or rocky slopes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and specifically requires acidic, well-drained soil conditions. It will not grow in clay and should not be fertilized.
The root-prune pouch production method supports a healthy root system for this specialized groundcover. Once established in a well-prepared site with the correct soil drainage and acidity, Red bearberry offers a resilient, low-maintenance solution for challenging landscapes.
