Product Details

The heartnut offers a combination of fast growth, tropical aesthetics, and edible potential for diverse landscapes. Offered as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, these trees are an economical choice for establishing larger agroforestry systems or orchards. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, this stock settles in before top growth begins, allowing the root system to acclimate to local conditions.

Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis is a variety of Japanese Walnut known for its heart-shaped nut and thin shell that cracks easily. It is important to note that these seedlings may not grow true-to-seed with the distinctive heart-shaped nut found in grafted varieties. The trees are fast-growing and develop beautiful, large tropical-looking leaves that form a wide-spreading canopy over time.

Ideally suited for agroforestry projects or as a specimen shade tree, the heartnut requires full sun and performs best in well-drained, fertile soil. At maturity, this tree can reach 30 feet in height with a significant spread of up to 60 feet. Although the species is self-pollinating and will produce a crop from a singular tree, optimal production is expected when at least two seedlings are planted to ensure better pollination.

Planting bareroot stock allows growers to introduce this unique walnut variety efficiently during the dormant season. With proper care and site selection, these trees can establish a robust structure capable of supporting future growth and nut production.
