Walnut, Butternut (Bareroot)

Butternut is a fast-growing native tree valued for its rich, buttery nuts and broad, spreading canopy. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting. This format is cost-effective for larger agroforestry or restoration projects and helps the tree develop a resilient root system when planted correctly.

Also known as the White Walnut, Juglans cinerea is a sun-loving species that forms a beautiful spreading canopy when grown in open conditions. It produces nuts in early fall that can be eaten raw or prepared in various ways. Beyond its edible value, the tree provides essential food and habitat for many birds and small mammals, supporting local biodiversity.

This tree is well-suited for orchard plantings, edible landscapes, and wildlife habitat zones. It requires a site with full sun and well-drained soil to thrive. Hardy in zones 3–7, the Butternut reaches a mature height of 50–60 feet with a spread of 35–50 feet, requiring ample space to accommodate its size.
