Product Details
Steeplebush offers showy pink floral spires and vibrant fall color, making it a standout native shrub. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting. This format is an economical choice for restoration projects or larger landscape installations. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these shrubs establish reliable root systems before top growth begins.
Spiraea tomentosa is the native species for which the historic Steepletop estate in Austerlitz is named. Unlike many non-native spiraeas that have a mounded habit, this plant maintains a distinct upright form. Also known as hardhack, it provides critical ecological value in regions where populations are declining due to wetland destruction. It serves as a larval host for Spring Azure and Columbia silkmoth caterpillars.
Ideally suited for wetland habitats, this shrub thrives in rain gardens and moist soil conditions. It performs best in part shade to full sun, reaching a mature height of 2–4 feet with a spread of 3–5 feet. The plant has a spreading habit, making it useful for naturalizing wet areas. It is hardy across zones 3–8.
Choosing bareroot plants allows for efficient handling during the dormant season. Once established, steeplebush contributes to local biodiversity while offering seasonal beauty. Ensure good soil contact during planting to support vigorous future growth.
