Product Details

American Plum is a disease-resistant native tree that offers abundant fruit and supports local ecology. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting. This format is an economical way to establish larger plantings like windbreaks or hedgerows. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these trees establish reliable root systems before top growth begins.

Prunus americana is known for its fragrant, large white flowers that bloom in April, followed by small red fruits in August. It serves as a robust pollinator partner in orchard settings and can also be utilized as a rootstock for other stone fruits. This species provides essential nesting cover for birds and attracts numerous native pollinators. It specifically hosts the larvae of the Coral Hairstreak, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, and Red Spotted Purple butterflies.

This tree is an excellent choice for hedgerows, windbreaks, and erosion control projects due to its suckering growth habit. It grows best in loamy, moist soils but can adapt to a range of conditions, including areas that experience flooding. However, it should not be planted in areas prone to drought. American Plum requires full sun to thrive and reaches a mature height of 15–20 feet with a spread of 10–15 feet.

Choosing bareroot stock allows for handling the tree during its natural dormancy, reducing stress during the initial transition. This species contributes significantly to wildlife habitat and landscape resilience over time. Ensure the planting area is ready for immediate installation to support vigorous spring emergence.
