Product Details

American Persimmon is a fast-growing native tree valued for its late-season fruit and suitability for silvopasture systems. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, making it a cost-effective option for establishing larger wildlife corridors or orchard rootstock. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these seedlings establish reliable root systems before top growth begins.

Known botanically as Diospyros virginiana, which translates to "fruit of the gods," this species is celebrated for its distinctive black, blocky bark and vibrant sunset orange and red fall foliage. These are seedling trees, meaning fruit production is variable and specific traits are not guaranteed. Consequently, they are best utilized as rootstock for grafting or in wildlife settings where genetic diversity is an asset.

This tree serves as an excellent larval host for the Luna Moth and provides a critical food source for wildlife, with fruit dropping incrementally from late summer into deep winter. It thrives in loamy, moist, well-drained soils but will perform poorly in dry conditions. For optimal fruit production, plant in full sun, though it tolerates partial shade. Since the species is dioecious, requiring both male and female trees for pollination, we recommend planting at least five trees to ensure proper fruit set. Expect a mature height of 40-60 feet with a spread of 30 feet.

Choosing bareroot stock allows for efficient handling and planting during the dormant season. With consistent moisture and protection from deer, these trees can develop into long-lived canopy components.
