Oak, White (Bareroot)

Product Details

White Oak is a long-lived ecological powerhouse that supports more biodiversity than almost any other tree group. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, making it a cost-effective choice for establishing larger stands or restoration projects. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these young trees develop the resilience needed to become generational fixtures in the landscape.

Quercus alba is renowned for its sweet, palatable acorns which contain lower tannin levels than those of the Red Oak group. Beyond its value as a food source, this species is a prized lumber tree, preferred for wine and whiskey barrels due to tyloses in the xylem that render the wood water-resistant. It also serves as a critical larval host for the Edward’s Hairstreak butterfly, supporting a wide range of beneficial insects.

Ideally suited for wildlife habitat, edible landscapes, and legacy plantings, this tree requires ample space to reach its mature stature of 50-80 feet in height and spread. It performs best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade, adapting to both wet and dry soils while thriving on well-drained slopes and uplands. Hardy in zones 3-9, White Oak provides essential food and cover for deer, birds, and bears.

Planting bareroot stock allows for efficient handling and straightforward establishment before top growth begins. With proper care, these trees grow into majestic specimens that anchor local ecosystems for centuries.
