Oak, Northern Red (Bareroot)

Product Details

Northern Red Oak serves as a cornerstone of local ecosystems, offering long-term stability and substantial wildlife support. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, which allows the root system to settle into the site before top growth begins. This format is particularly cost-effective for larger restoration projects or extensive landscape plantings. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these trees establish reliably and provide generations of ecological value.

Quercus rubra is one of the dominant oak species in Northeastern forests, recognized by its round, spreading crown and dark green leaves that turn bright red in autumn. It is arguably one of the most abundant food sources for wildlife in the region, with squirrels and white-tailed deer depending on it for survival. Beyond mammals, this oak hosts numerous Lepidoptera species, including the White-M Hairstreak, Banded Hairstreak, and Gray Hairstreak.

This tree is well-suited for reforestation projects, shade plantings, and wildlife corridors where its mature size of 70 feet tall and 50 feet wide can be accommodated. It prefers moist, well-drained loamy soils but can adapt to a range of soil conditions. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate shade, making it a flexible choice for various planting sites. Many foragers also note that the acorns possess excellent depth of flavor. Hardiness zones 4–8.

Planting bareroot stock ensures that the tree begins its life in your landscape with a natural root structure ready to expand. Once established, Northern Red Oak becomes a resilient fixture in the environment, contributing to the forest canopy and food web for decades. Successful growth begins with a well-prepared site and consistent moisture during the first few seasons.
