Oak, Black (Bareroot)

Product Details

Black oak is a majestic, long-lived tree that serves as a foundational species in northeastern forests. We offer this species as bareroot stock for planting during late fall and early spring dormant windows. This format is cost-effective for larger restoration projects or establishing new groves. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these trees establish strong root systems before top growth begins.

Quercus velutina is distinguished by its unique yellow-orange inner bark and blocky outer bark, which provides significant resistance to fire. Like other oaks, it is an ecological powerhouse that hosts hundreds of different insect species, including the caterpillars of many butterflies and moths. This species is well-adapted to the region and plays a critical role in local ecosystems.

Ideally suited for wildlife habitat, restoration plantings, or as a shade tree, black oak reaches a mature height of 70 feet with a spread of 50 feet. It prefers moist, well-drained loamy soils but is particularly tolerant of drier sites. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate shade. Hardy in zones 3-9, this tree is a resilient choice for varied landscape conditions.

Planting bareroot stock allows for direct handling of the root system to ensure proper orientation and depth. With consistent watering during the first season, this hardy oak adapts well to its permanent location.
