Product Details

Honey Locust is a fast-growing, adaptable tree valued for its soil-building properties and utility in silvopasture systems. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, providing an economical solution for establishing windbreaks or larger agroforestry projects. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these seedlings establish strong root systems before top growth begins.

Gleditsia triacanthos seedlings are grown from a thornless variety, making them safer and more manageable for integrated land use. This species is recognized for its ability to improve soil quality and increase grass production beneath its canopy through dappled shade. The foliage consists of small, delicate leaves that turn a bright yellow in the fall, adding ornamental value to the landscape.

Ideally suited for silvopasture applications, this tree tolerates salt and pollution while thriving in full sun. It adapts to a large range of soils, including areas prone to moderate drought or flooding. Reaching a mature height of 60 feet with a 40-foot spread, it provides significant shade and produces pods with edible sweet green flesh. In spring, the flowers attract native pollinators, and the tree serves as a larval host for the Silver Spotted Skipper and various moths.

Planting bareroot stock ensures that the tree can acclimate to local conditions as it emerges from dormancy. Growers can expect a resilient specimen that contributes to ecosystem health and livestock forage availability. This robust tree is an excellent choice for diversifying landscapes and supporting local wildlife.
