Product Details

Northern Pecan offers the potential for nut production in colder climates while serving as a robust addition to diverse landscapes. We offer this species as bareroot stock for planting during the late fall and early spring dormant windows. This format supports the establishment of its deep taproot system before top growth begins. Whether used for nut production or as rootstock for other Carya species, these seedlings provide a cost-effective option for larger plantings when planted correctly.

Carya illinoensis is a substantial tree known for its dual value in agroforestry and ecology. These specific seedlings are grown from seed sourced from Grimo Nursery in Ontario, selected for the ability to ripen nuts as far north as Zone 5. While seedling genetics vary and consistent nut ripening in the coldest zones is not guaranteed, this lineage offers improved cold tolerance compared to southern varieties. The species also serves as a larval host for the Banded Hairstreak and Hickory Hairstreak butterflies.

This tree is an excellent choice for riparian areas and floodplains, thriving in deep alluvial soils while remaining tolerant of occasional flooding and dry spells. It requires full sun to reach its mature stature of 70 feet tall and 45 feet wide. Northern Pecan functions well as a long-term canopy tree in food forests or restoration projects, providing an abundant food source for people and wildlife alike.

Planting bareroot Northern Pecan ensures the tree settles into its permanent location with direct soil contact for the developing root system. Growers can expect a resilient, long-lived tree that contributes to local biodiversity and potential harvests in years to come. A well-prepared site with adequate space for its large mature size will support vigorous growth.
