Product Details

American hazelnut offers a reliable source of edible nuts and essential habitat for local wildlife. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, making it a cost-effective choice for establishing long hedgerows or restoration projects. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these shrubs adapt readily to their new environment before top growth begins.

Corylus americana is a native shrub known for its multi-stemmed form and ecological versatility. It serves as a larval host for numerous Lepidoptera species, supporting biodiversity directly within the landscape. The plant provides sustenance for native bird species, squirrels, and chipmunks, integrating seamlessly into local food webs.

This shrub is ideal for forest edges, windbreaks, and hedgerows where it can reach a mature height of 15 feet and a spread of 12 feet. It prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil for optimal nut production, though it will tolerate drier soils and partial shade. For successful pollination and nut set, at least two distinct plants should be installed near one another.

Planting bareroot stock allows the root system to settle during the dormant season, setting the stage for vigorous development in spring. With consistent watering during the first season, this hardy grower establishes well across a range of site conditions.
