Product Details

Yellow Birch stands as the largest birch species in North America, distinguished by its striking visual character and ecological utility. We provide this tree as bareroot stock for dormant planting during late fall and early spring. This format offers an economical solution for establishing larger stands or restoration projects. When planted correctly in a suitable location, these trees establish reliably before top growth begins.

Known botanically as Betula alleghaniensis and sometimes called Golden Birch, this species features distinct, shimmery bronze bark that peels in thin, papery strips. The buds, twigs, and inner bark possess a wintergreen flavor often used to make a digestive tea. Additionally, the tree can be tapped for sap in early spring, although the sugar content is lower than that of Sugar Maple.

This tree serves as an excellent choice for timber plantings, wildlife habitat, or as a specimen tree in a large landscape. It requires full sun and prefers well-drained soil to thrive. Reaching mature heights of 60-80 ft, it supports local ecosystems by providing seeds and buds for birds, while its leaves host numerous moth and butterfly larvae. It is hardy in zones 3-7.

Choosing bareroot plants allows for handling and planting during the tree's natural dormancy period. This approach supports healthy root development once the growing season commences. A well-prepared site ensures this substantial hardwood can reach its full potential over time.
