Elderberry (Bareroot)

Elderberry is a highly valued native shrub known for its immune-boosting flowers and fruit. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, which is an economical way to establish productive hedgerows or restoration sites. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, these vigorous growers establish quickly before top growth begins.

Sambucus canadensis produces large clusters of white flowers in midsummer that mature into dark-purple berries. Our inventory consists of clonally propagated plants selected for superior fruit production, including the Adams, Bob Gordon, and Pocahontas cultivars. These specific selections are chosen for their vigor, flower size, and berry quality.

Ideally suited for rain gardens, riparian buffers, or edible landscapes, this shrub thrives in rich, moist soil and performs exceptionally well in wet soil conditions. It requires full sun for maximum fruit production, though it can tolerate partial shade. Hardy in zones 3-9, plants reach a mature height of 10 feet and a spread of 6 feet. Note that fresh elderberries should always be cooked before consumption to avoid stomach upset.

Planting bareroot stock allows the root system to settle into the soil during the dormant season. These shrubs are naturally vigorous, sending up new shoots annually that can grow several feet in a single season.

Cultivar Notes

• Adams: Adams is a vigorous plant with large, beautiful flowers and large, dark purple berries.
• Bob Gordon: Discovered in 1999 in Missouri, Bob Gordon elderberries are sweeter and larger than most other cultivars and loaded with antioxidants.
• Pocahontas: Originating in Pocahontas, Arkansas, Pocahontas is a later blooming cultivar with large flowers.
