Aronia melanocarpa
Despite the name warning off those who would snack on this deep purple berry, Aronia or chokeberry has been steadily gaining popularity due to its designation as a superfood. The fruit is exceptionally tart and bitter if eaten raw, but makes high quality jams and jellies. The berries are also popular among many bird species. It is easily grown in a variety of conditions, including wet and boggy soils. These shrubs spread easily but can be controlled if suckers are removed. Showy spring flowers and fall foliage add to the appeal. Larval host to over twenty species of caterpillars.
