Juglans nigra
A fast-growing, beautiful native nut tree that produces unique and delicious walnuts. The nuts offer a deep and rich flavor that is unparalleled compared to other walnuts. The husks are commonly used as a dye as it holds up much longer than other natural dyes. Be conscientious of where you plant black walnuts as many other plant species are intolerant to the juglone chemicals produced by these trees. It also has a very high value wood, often used for furniture. Plant for human consumption or as a long-lived wildlife tree. Larval host for Banded Hairstreak, Luna Moth, and Regal Moth.
