Fall ’25 Bare-Roots – Sale Opens 10/1

Pinus strobus

An attractive, fast-growing evergreen with soft blue-ish needles, the white pine is so tolerant of pruning that it may be grown and pruned as a hedge. Considered one of the most valuable trees in North America, it’s prized as lumber for its straight-grained wood, and for ecological value as one of the fastest growing northern conifers. It is, however, susceptible to a number of insect and disease problems. It thrives in well-drained sandy soils of medium quality, but not heavy clay or poorly drained sites. Can grow normally in up to 45% shade and can compete with black walnut trees, though it prefers full sun. Host to larvae of the Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis). The seeds are browsed by a variety of mammals and birds, who also use the bushy foliage for shelter.

Zone: 3-8 (Map)

Habitat: Moist soil, but tolerant of occasionally dry conditions. Part shade to full sun.

Growth: 50-100 ft tall, 30-60 ft wide at maturity.
