Carya illinoensis

Seed from a cold hardy pecan that can ripen nuts up to Zone 5. Since this is a seedling, however, its ability to ripen nuts in colder climates is variable. An excellent choice for riparian areas, and can be grown as an abundant food source for people and wildlife. Can be grown out or used as rootstock for other Carya (Hickory) species. Seedlings for ’25-’26 are grown from seed sourced from Grimo Nursery in Ontario. Larval host for Banded Hairstreak and Hickory Hairstreak.

Habitat: Ideally grown in deep alluvial soils. Can tolerate dry soils and flooding. Full sun.

Growth: 70 ft tall, 45 ft wide at maturity.
