Fragaria virginiana
Also known as Virginia strawberry, this ground cover spreads by runners off of fibrous roots. In early summer, sweet, small white flowers give way to some of the best wild berries around. Shade-tolerant, though fruit production is better in full sun. Cultivated strawberries are hybrids developed from this native species and the South American one. Berries are relished by wildlife of all kinds, and the plants serve as larval host to Gray Hairstreak and Grizzled Skipper caterpillars. Wild strawberry is noted to support biological control of pest insects by attracting predatory or parasitic insects that prey upon them and for being of special importance to native bees.Â
