Clusters of pink buds yield lavender-colored or light blue bell-shaped flowers. A spectacular display, especially when grown in masses, before foliage dies to the ground by mid-summer. Due to summer dormancy Virginia bluebells planted in intentional gardens should be overplanted with annuals or co-planted with other native perennials that can fill that niche as the season continues. Found in moist, rich woods and river floodplains, this plant requires moist soil to thrive. Over their few weeks of bloom time the flowers are visited by bees, butterflies and moths.
