Liriodendron tulipifera
The many-named tulip poplar, also known as tulip tree and yellow poplar, is a very important species in the hardwood forests of the northeast. Tall, fast-growing, and stately with distinctive foliage, this species can grow up to 150’ tall. It’s an important timber tree with beautiful flowers that usually occur over 50’ up the trunk and can be difficult to see. Due to its size and relatively shallow root system, it is better suited as a specimen or shade tree in larger landscapes. The beautiful flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators and the tree is used by a wide array of other wildlife. Host to the eastern swallowtail butterfly.
